This lesson will provide you with some pieces of information about how to work as a departure controller, considering the fact that you already know how to use the Pro Controller software (if not, you'd better see THIS before).

1 - MATERIAL :

See L6-APP.

2 - COORDINATION :

See L6-APP (disregard indications about arrivals, DEP control is for departures only).

3 - WHAT DOES THE JOB CONSIST OF :

Your job is to manage the DEPARTING traffic from 10 to 50 NM around the airfield (could be more sometimes). You will find the appropriate phraseology to be used into files L6-Phraseo1 and L6-Phraseo2.

This position is activated on big airfields only. However, it is never activated alone. If you are DEP (responsible for departures), this means somebody is responsible for arrivals : APP.

Summary :

* Big airfields : 2 controllers available for approach control => division in 2 parts : 

- DEP deals with departures only.

- APP deals with arrivals only.

* Big airfields : only 1 controller available for approach control => no division :

- APP deals with both departures and arrivals.

* Other airfields : no need to have 2 controllers active for approach control, one is sufficient => no division :

- APP deals with both departures and arrivals.

Here are now some guidelines :

- Same as described in L6-APP except :

- you will deal with departing traffics only

- you, not APP, choose the IFR departure clearances. However this has to be coordinated with APP.

- speed regulation is not so important as it could be for arrivals.

- you are not concerned by timed approaches.

4 - PARTICULARITY :

When no APP is active, you can't activate a DEP position only. You will have to deal with both departures and arrivals. In such a case, take the APP position and see L6-APP for details.
