L5 - Air Traffic Services25-11-2005 | |

Let's make things as short as possible. There are 3 air traffic services : control - information - alert These services are provided to all types of flight :
- IFR. ) - VFR. ) => see L1-VFR&IFR for details. - Special VFR. )
They are provided into different types of airspace :
- Class A to G airspaces. ) - Restricted areas. ) => see L5-Airspaces for details. - Dangerous areas. ) 1 - CONTROL SERVICE : This service consists of regulating the traffic and avoiding collisions (inflight or on the ground) according to two methods :
- spacing (by giving appropriate instructions/vectors/clearances to aircraft) : laterally = 5 NM in most countries vertically = 1000 ft up to FL 290, 2000 ft vertically above FL 290 except in RVSM airspaces (1). * controllers are responsible for choosing appropriate altitudes/flight levels and routes in order to respect the standard spacing. * pilots are responsible for complying with controllers' instructions (unless they think this could endanger their aircraft or if they can't technically comply with the clearance - in such a case, they must inform the controller). Remark : on ground, spacing consists of giving instruction to avoid any collision between grounded aircraft.
- traffic information (by helping pilots to see traffics that are potentially conflictual, no specific spacing standards) * controllers are responsible for informing the pilots about conflictual traffics. * pilots are responsible for avoiding these traffics by executing any relevant maneuver in compliance with general air rules.
The method to be used depends on the airspace class and the type of traffic (IFR or VFR). See L5-Airspaces.
This service is provided by control units :
- CTR (center control) - APP (approach control) - DEP (departure control) See also details in L5-Clearances. - TWR (tower control) - GND (ground control)
(1) RVSM = reduced vertical separation minima, 1000 ft instead of 2000 ft between FL 290 and FL 410 in certain parts of the world. 2 - INFORMATION SERVICE : This service consists of giving any relevant information contributing to flight safety :
- airfield parameters - weather conditions runway in use, wind, visibility, clouds, temperature, altimeter setting, transition level this is usually indicated in your ATIS - area activity particularly as far as restricted and dangerous areas are concerned - airfield status airfield closed due to crash on runway, limited control capacity, no parallel runway operations... - controllers' status control service terminated within 10 or 15 mins because you are going to disconnect simultaneous activation of GND + TWR in addition to APP because a colleague is leaving deactivation or intempestive disconnection of a control facility - flight information about other traffics position, altitude and heading of conflictual traffics (unless this is already provided under control service) - assistance to an aircraft suggestions to help an uncontrolled flight joining a point or an airfield information and help to an aircraft that seems not flying according to the prescribed SID, STAR or route. - any other relevant piece of information helping the pilot to fly safely.
This service is provided by all units :
- CTR (center control) - APP (approach control) - DEP (departure control) - TWR (tower control) - GND (ground control) - FSS (flight service station) 3 - ALERT SERVICE : This service consists of alerting and helping appropriate stations in case an aircraft is in state of emergency. Usually, these stations are a RCC (Rescue Coordination Center) or RSC (Rescue Sub-Center). We have none on IVAO. Anyway, we are not going to start some search and rescue operations for a virtual accident. Most of the time, your situation is reinitialized and you just have to coordinate that with the controller to resume your flight. Since nobody is in danger in our virtual world, this service is of no importance on IVAO except in special events where people are supposed to play the game fully. In such a case, the organizers will give all details about the procedures to be used. |
