The TCAS is a Traffic alert and Collision Avoidance System. The purpose of the system is to show you the position of the surrounding traffics and indicate when there is a potential conflict according to 2 criteria : 1 - TCAS CAUTION : A traffic (shown in yellow) is within +/- 1600 ft and/or +/- 7 NM from your present position. When you receive a TCAS caution, you must advise the controller and, if needed, perform any relevant maneuver to avoid the collision. 2 - TCAS ALERT : A traffic (shown in red) is within +/- 900 ft and/or +/- 3 NM from your present position. A sound signal is issued; you can silence it by double clicking into the TCAS window. When you receive a TCAS alert, your reaction time is very short. You should perform any relevant maneuver to avoid the collision and advise the controller. In a heavy traffic area, it is particularly important to advise the controller as soon as possible in order to avoid creating a new conflict with another traffic. Remark : In real life, there are 2 types of TCAS : - TCAS 1, generating position of traffics only (called TA = Traffic Advisories). - TCAS 2, generating TAs and suggestions to avoid the conflictual traffics in the vertical plan (called RA = Resolution Advisories). Most real commercial airplanes are equipped with a TCAS 2. The SB TCAS doesn't give any RA. You will be provided with TAs only. Therefore, we can say the SB TCAS is equivalent to the real TCAS 1.
The traffics appear like little triangles with numbers indicating their vertical separation with you - for instance : -012 = 1200 ft below 121 = 12100 ft above See SB manual for details about the TCAS. The TCAS is a permanent feature of SB. So whatever the type of aircraft you choose, it will always be available, even in aircraft which doesn't have any in real. Feel free to use it or not according to the type of aircraft you are flying in and the realism level you are looking for. |
